The Birdcage (1996)A comedy about a man, with two gay fathers, who falls in love with a woman from a very conservative family. This is a remake of the 1978 film La Cage Aux Folles. Nathan Lane plays the role of Albert Goldman, aka Starina the feminine drag queen partner of Robin Williams. This was, arguably, Nathan's biggest film role following the success of his voice work in the Lion King (I enjoyed Mouse Hunt a lot more but it had less star power and acclaim than the birdcage). The entire cast is fantastic and the movie moves along quite well. Of note is a superbly funny performance by Hank Azaria (of the Simpsons). Ironically, the film caught flack for its portrayal of gay men. At the time Nathan was not yet open about his sexuality, though those familiar with Broadway most likely had little doubt. This is a must watch for fans of any of the performers in this film. Nathan Fan Rating: A- |
